Sluggers Come Alive in Win Over Nationals

PITTSBURGH — It was one of those nights where everything clicked in the Pirates’ lineup; where hitters rack up extra base hits, get on base, drive in runs…and it all looks so easy.

Garrett Jones, Pedro Alvarez and Ryan Doumit had one of those nights Friday, combining to drive in seven runs in an 8-5 win over the Washington Nationals at PNC Park.

Jones went 2-for-4 with two doubles and 3 RBIs, anchoring a batting order that hit a combined 4-for-6 with runners in scoring position. It was the perfect remedy for a 7-for-50 slump he carried into the game, and a .144 batting average since July 28.

“It just felt good to hit a couple of balls hard again, especially with runners in scoring position,” Jones said. “The most frustrating part when you’re slumping is that you know you’re not helping the team. It feels really good to get a couple of big hits that helped result in a win that we needed.”

Speaking of much-needed wins, Pirates starter Zach Duke (7-12) earned his second in three starts after dropping his last three decisions. He allowed four runs on five hits and three walks with five strikouts over five innings, including facing four runners in the sixth inning without recording an out.

Duke allowed a solo home run by second baseman Danny Espinosa, — the first of his big league career — in the third, but he got all the offense he needed as the Pirates combined for all eight of their runs during the third, fourth, and fifth innings.

Ronny Cedeno led off the third with a double, and Duke moved him along with a sacrifice bunt, setting up an Andrew McCutchen sacrifice fly to tie the game at one. Jose Tabata followed with a single to right, and Neil Walker drew a seven-pitch walk before Jones doubled to left to score them both for a 3-1 lead.

Doumit led off the fourth with a solo home run off a 2-1 sinker Nationals’ starter Livan Hernandez left over the plate to put the Pirates ahead by three. They strung together five consecutive hits in the fifth, including run-scoring doubles by Jones and Alvarez and an RBI single by Doumit, to take an 8-1 lead into the sixth.

“They’re both the kind of hitters who are going to have some down times,” manager John Russell said of Doumit and Jones. “But they’re also good major league hitters. You know at some point they’ll hit.”

Tabata was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and Walker extended his hitting streak to 10 games. The two are hitting an identical .310 during their rookie seasons.

Sean Gallagher allowed a run in the sixth, an RBI single by Adam Dunn, but afterward the bullpen conglomerate of Wil Ledezma, Chan Ho Park, Brian Burres, Chris Resop and Joel Hanrahan combined for three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and two walks with six strikeouts.

Hanrahan struck out two in the ninth to earn his third save in six opportunities with Pittsburgh. He previously held the closer’s role while in Washington, but was removed from it on two different occasions in 2009 before being traded to the Pirates in the Nyjer Morgan/Sean Burnett deal.

“I still know most of the guys over there and I’m sure I’ll get some messages,” Hanrahan said.

The Pirates won just their second game in their last seven times, while the Nationals have lost three straight. The Bucs improved their record to 30-36 at home.

“Chasing 3000″

3,000 may be just a number– but to Pirate fans it stands for so much more. When the number 3,000 is spoken, there is only one thing that comes to my mind; not recording artist Andre 3000 or the movie “Mr. 3000″, or even the Beatles 3000.

“The Great One” ended his career with 3,000 hits. Roberto Clemente is not just loved here in the city of Pittsburgh, but all over the world.

“Chasing 3000,” a film shot primarily in Pittsburgh, opened at the Harris Theatres Friday. The story is about two brothers who drive across country to see their hero, Roberto Clemente, get his 3000th hit.

Mickey (Trevor Morgan) is a high school boy who always imitates Clemente’s moves in the batters box. His younger brother, Roger (Rory Culkin), who idiolizes Roberto as well, has multiple sclerosis. Ray Liotta stars in the film as the adult Mikey and also narrates the film. Lauren Holly is in the movie as well, playing the mother of Mickey and Roger.

You can watch the movie trailer here. You can also check out the IMDB page here.

Mickey’s story is based on a true story by Bill Mikita –who grew up in Steubenville, Ohio.

“I’m 55 years old now,” said Mikita. “If you ask men of my generation, growing up, how many loved Clemente — there was just something about him. Not only in the way he played the game — and he did play with this flair and style — but there was something about him that was sort of noble. It’s hard to put your finger on. His humanity or nobility — he projected that.”

“It really is a Pittsburgh story,” Mikita says. “Not only about our love of Clemente, but of Pittsburgh.”

A lot of Pittsburgh is in the film, including PNC Park of course.

“Chasing 3000″ will be playing at the Harris Theatre in downtown Pittsburgh. You can watch the film through Sept. 12. screenings: 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday; 5:30 p.m. Saturday; 3 p.m. Sunday; 7:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday; and 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. Thursday. The cost of admission is $7. For more information call (412) 681- 5449.

“It’s one of those rare films that everyone across the board seems to love, from eight years old to 90,” Ryan Johnson, the film’s producer said. “Similar to ‘The Blind Side,’ it’s really an underserved space, to have a film that appeals to families that ‘s not animated. So it’s been a real labor of love to get it out there and believe in it.”

I plan on watching the film on Monday so check back for a movie review on Tuesday.

They just wanted to go a different route. Now, over here, I’m just looking at it as a new opportunity for me.”

Sanchez, Lambo, and Mercer Headed to the AFL

The rosters for the Arizona Fall League were announced yesterday, with four Pirate names being among them:

Tony Sanchez, C – Sanchez was the Pirates 2009 first round pick, even helping the High-A Lynchburg Hillcats win the Carolina League last year. Sanchez also got off to a hot start in 2010 with the Bradenton Marauders, but a jaw injury has sidelined him since June. Sanchez will go to the Pirates’ instructional league before his AFL season starts.

“It’s going to be another wonderful opportunity,” Sanchez said. “I try to compare it to the Cape [Cod League]. It’s more competitive out there now, but I’m feeling the same way as when I found out I was going to play in the Cape. You’re looking forward to playing against the best guys in the country.”

Jordy Mercer, IF – Mercer was the Pirates’ third round pick in 2008, and has played for the Double-A Altona Curve this season. He has hit for a .275 average in 2010, with an OPS of .690.

Josh Harrison, IF – Harrison came to the Pirates in last year’s John Grabow/Tom Gorzelanny trade. In this season with the Curve, Harrison has hit for an average of .303, with an OPS of .754.

Andrew Lambo, OF – Lambo was recently acquired from the Dodgers in the Octavio Dotel trade. Since then, he has put up good numbers with the Curve, with an OPS of .770. A slight shoulder injury has hampered him lately, though he should be healthy by the time the AFL starts up.

All four players will join the Mesa Solar Sox. The Pirates will also send three pitchers, although those players haven’t been named yet. The AFL begins play on October 19th.

Pre-game Fungoes, September 1: Milledge’s Struggles in Right Continue

Nearly three months ago, Lastings Milledge made the switch to right field after the Pirates called up Jose Tabata to play left. But despite plenty of time to get adjusted to his new surroundings, Milledge is still having problems in right field.

“We’re working him hard, hitting him balls during [batting practice], but he’s having a hard time making the adjustment [from] left to right,” manager John Russell said. “A lot of times people think it’s tougher to go from right to left, but he’s not seeing the ball well. It’s just getting that first step to be a little bit better.”

Milledge has continued to take horrible routes and misjudges the ball, becoming a less-than-average fielder. The gaffes he has routinely made are starting to become a concern, and he is currently platooning in right with Ryan Doumit.

Although he has shown some extended measure of success offensively — especially against left-handed pitchers and with runners in scoring position — Milledge needs to improve his defense drastically if he expects to be a starter in 2011.

More News and Notes:

  • RHP Evan Meek will try to play catch Wednesday and might be able to pitch this weekend at PNC Park against the Nationals.
  • 1B Jeff Clement was cleared to take batting pratice and took part in the team workout on Tuesday afternoon. He will head to Indianapolis on Wednesday to begin his rehab assignment with the Triple-A team. He still has irritation in his left knee while running but it still needs to be determined if surgery is needed.
  • RHP Charlie Morton threw a supervised flat-ground session tuesday, all fastballs.
  • The Pirates 10 wins this season against the Cubs is the most since winning 10 in 1992.
  • OF/1B John Bowker was recalled from Indianapolis and is expected to be in uniform for today’s game.

Wednesday’s Pitching Matchup:

James McDonald (2-3, 4.97 ERA)

VS

Tom Gorzelanny (7-8, 3.98 ERA)

J-Mac got the loss in his last start against the Brewers. He pitched 6.1 innings and gave up six runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out seven. Kosuke Fukudome is the only Cubs player to have faced McDonald — he went 0-for-1.

Gorzelanny had a rough month of August, going 1-3 with a 5.46 ERA. He lost against the Reds on 8/27, giving up six runs on seven hits through five innings.
